TAKE TEN: Devon Williams

In his photography career, Devon Williams started small (an old cellphone camera), slowly but surely working his way up to where he is now. We chatted to him about where his passion lies, his favourite camera and the four things on his photography bucket list.

Why do you love photography?

The allure of freezing a fleeting moment in time has always kept me captivated. When I first received compliments for images captured with a VGA cellphone camera, I knew I was onto something special. It encouraged me to keep pushing the boundaries of what I could achieve. Over time, I discovered an innate ability to compose a compelling shot. While it may not have been flawless, my determination to improve never waned.

I didn’t have the privilege of a formal photography education, but that seemed to work in my favour, igniting an insatiable hunger to chase my dream. Today, I proudly consider myself self-taught, with a wealth of knowledge gathered from resources like YouTube and one online course that set me on my path.

Tell us a bit more about your photography and what you would like to achieve through this.

I’ve accumulated experience in weddings and events, also other genres including portraits and street photography. Yet, my true passion lies in product photography. The challenge of transforming ordinary items into visually stunning pieces that could rival million-dollar setups is what drives me. I love the dark moody vibes, side lit to create contrast and separation.

What made you switch to Fujifilm and when did this happen?

Several years ago, I crossed paths with a photographer named Alan Sayers, who previously transitioned from another brand to Fujifilm. His Instagram feed immediately conveyed the remarkable quality of Fujifilm’s imagery. Later, when I began working at Cameraworld, I seized the opportunity to explore various camera systems. In just two months, I found myself completely enamoured with Fujifilm and there was no looking back.

Which Fujifilm camera(s) do you use and do you have a favourite lens?

At present, my camera collection includes an X-T3, X-T20 and X-E2, accompanied by an XF18-55mm F2.8-4 lens. Yet to be added to my collection is the XF50-140mm F2.8 lens – it stands out as my favourite. I have yet to encounter a lens that delivers sharper, crisper images.

What do you love most about the camera and lens?

Fujifilm is like the underestimated underdog, often overlooked until people witness the remarkable results it can produce. In comparison to industry-leading brands, Fujifilm holds its ground admirably. With the quality of Fujifilm’s glass, affordability and excellence coexist.

What’s on your photography bucket list?

My bucket list includes:

  1. Embarking on a one-month North-To-South photography tour of my motherland – Namibia
  2. Adding a Fujifilm GFX100 to up my product photography game
  3. Finally taking the step to start my YouTube channel
  4. Doing studio sessions for my entire family to create the ultimate family tree photo book.

Do you have one photography tip to share?

Look at other creators’ work as inspiration and not as something to compete against. Your journey is unique to you because no two people walk the same path in life.

What never leaves your camera bag?

My Fujifilm X-E2 with the XF18-55mm. The combination is unrivalled when it comes to street photography or just as my everyday carry.
