TAKE TEN: Gary Van Wyk
Starting as an intern photographer at a newspaper back in 2003, Gary Van Wyk’s photographic journey has taken him across the globe, photographing notable figures such as Nelson Mandela, Oprah Winfrey, and Desmond Tutu along the way. We caught up with him to chat about his approach to portraiture, how being a press photographer upped his skills, and a wish-list subject.
You started your career as a press photographer. How has this influenced your current work?
I always say that starting my career as a press photographer was the best thing that could ever have happened to me. It taught me how to handle any situation, and quickly. Being in the middle of tough situations and remaining sensitive to the subject was a big lesson.
When shooting portraiture, how much time is spent on learning a bit more about the person beforehand, or are you happy to simply shoot in the moment?
I don’t put much energy into learning about my subjects beforehand, because I like to go into the space without any preconceived ideas about a person. I prefer a fresh energy and for the picture to unfold as I’m learning about the person in front of my camera.
Why did you choose to buy into the Fujifilm GFX system?
I chose it for the quality of the image and of course the colour it produces.
Have you learnt any valuable lessons about photography now that you’ve owned a GFX for a while?
I’ve definitely learnt a new approach to colour photography with the GFX and feel it has elevated my colour work.
You’ve worked on several projects throughout your career. Is there one that particularly stands out?
Definitely my long-term project with an Amazonian tribe called the Huni Kuin. It’s a project very close to my heart.
What do you wish you knew earlier in your career that you know now?
Keep your gear as simple as possible!
Any person in any era. Who would your subject be and why?
Bob Marley pops into my mind immediately. He is cool in every way possible, he created incredible music and always stood for the people.
