JOHN ARMSTRONG: Sobs, Luke and Lefty
While working on certain shoots I made friends with 3 DJ’s (Sobs, Luke, and Lefty) and as we got to know each other, I found out they live in Masiphumelele and I live in Fish Hoek, so very close to one another, but totally different worlds. I had asked them if they would be interested in me doing a shoot with them in Masi, which they were keen.
Around the same time, I was asked by Fujifilm South Africa to use and test a pre-production camera around 6 months before its release, to give feedback to Fujifilm Japan. I then thought it would be a great opportunity to combine the two projects together, which I did.
Initially the shoot was to be reportage, naturally capturing a day in the life of the 3 DJ’s but all changed when I got to know them better and their families. I then decided I wanted to do portrait shoots of them, their family and others in their community, in the same way, I would do for my clients and I wanted to give them actual prints of these photos to hang on their walls, something to be proud of. Fujifilm came onboard and printed all the images i had taken on this project and I went back into Masi, found each person and delivered their prints.
