Fujifilm X-H1 – Rick Joaquim – Bongeziwe Mabandla
BEHIND THE SCENES: Rick Joaquim takes us behind the scenes as he shoots and directs this incredible “Bawo Wam” music video for the talented Bongeziwe Mabandla.
Rick gives us a few insights into why he loved shooting with the Fujifilm X-H1:
For the Bongeziwe Mabandla “Bawo Wam” music video I wanted to make use of a technique called Double Exposure.
Double Exposure, or Multiple Exposure, is a photographic technique that combines 2 different images into a single image. And is something I’ve always found super super beautiful and exciting. The technique has been practiced for several years but really wanted to apply it to my cinematography. So the way I went about this was that we shot all the foreground plates and people against a green-screen, this allowed us to superimpose any images and footage I would shoot later on over the characters as well as affording us way more flexibility in post-production. My animator and friend, Charl Naudé and I had a lot of fun with this and he definitely helped me deliver what I saw in my mind when I first envisioned this whole music video.
We also decided very early on that we wanted the whole music video to be in black and white, and shooting for black and white is something I quite enjoy as both a Cinematographer and Photographer, as it makes you think in terms of tones and contrast instead of colour.
